The first shots and the first American casualties of the war occurred on Lexington Battle Green; North Bridge was the second engagement of the day. Inscribed on the Line of the Minute Men Boulder on Lexington Battle Green is the phrase “Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here,” attributed to Captain John Parker, commander of the Lexington militia.
